I wish everyone a very happy new year! No, more importantly, I wish everyone opportunity for happiness, success and the ability to work at it.  Because happiness and success do not come easy. It really must be something you work at. And if your heart is in it, you may find it doesn't feel like work.

For many, the previous year is always full of terrible rough spots, and maybe we breeze through social media and see too much of “ THIS YEAR SUCKED!”. Personally, I don’t like to label any one year good or bad, because every year brings challenges, heartache, and even loss, but as that famous Days of Our Lives tagline says, "Like sands through the hourglass, so are the --" well, you know.

Every year also brings success, victory, opportunity, and love, if you’re receptive to it and are willing to roll with it when things don't go your way. And you appreciate what you have. I sometimes need a reminder of the little things that make me happy, so I gave myself a 'Top 5 list of New Years Advice' that I thought I'd share!

#5    Don’t wish one year to be better than the last, because you’ll likely be disappointed at least every other year.

#4   That old coworker or colleague you haven’t seen in a while and always think “I should have lunch or coffee with them.” Do it. Don’t be that L.A. person who says, “Let’s have lunch” and then flakes. You’ll laugh over good times, and you might just help each other network.

#3   Find snow. If you live in a warm climate, go find snow at least once this year. And trees. And if you live in a cold climate and can’t afford the plane fare, um, watch movies with deserts or tropical jungles in them. I recommend Raiders of the Lost Ark. It has both!

#2   Enjoy some really food and drink. I'm talkin' about the 'good stuff'. The top shelf. Life is too short not to understand what the fuss is all about. There's a reason 007 orders Bollinger. Treat yourself and others!

#1   Go to the movies. As in a movie in a real movie theatre, and be sure to talk about it afterwards. We’re getting too used to binge watching series and films on our couches. Nothing beats a few hours at the cinema with family and good friends.
